The Coat of arms exhibit at Origins Centre, University of the Witwatersrand, in collaboration with Digital Fabric, 2022
The motto of the South African Coat of Arms reads: !ke e: |xarra ||ke “People who are different come together.” The human figures in the South African coat of Arms are based on a human figure in the San rock artwork referred to as the Linton panel.
This art was painted by ancestors of the San who once lived in the eastern Cape. The Coat of Arms thus references the indigenous peoples of South Africa and the intricacy and complexity of the ancient art, and draws on its power to unite. The exhibit has an interactive monitor that allows visitors to explore and magnify the details of the Linton panel.
