SA PAVILLION FOR THE VENICE BIENNALE ARTE | 2024

The project involved understanding the constraints of a space 8000km away and the complexity of spatial production.

The landscape was designed so that it could be flat packed and transported – by truck and boat and assembled quickly without screw fixings or glue.

The two landscape forms were articulated through 190 unique custom-designed panel shapes. These were cut using computer numerical control machinery and assembled with 1625 connector pieces.

The layout of the landscape and ‘rain’ installations were articulated to befit the unusual ‘L’ shaped space and architectural renders were utilised to imagine various installation configurations.

Entry and facade to the pavilion were designed to be ‘soft’ – a sound barrier curtain allows fluid access and an information totem outside provides a forecourt space and information about the artwork.
